Customized electronic designing – the step by step process

Are you looking to get a circuit designed? Do you need a customized design for electronic circuit?
Well, below mentioned are the steps used in the electronic circuit design
1.       Having a concept for the design – as with any designing process, conceptualization is the initial step. Knowing what you want is the basic thing. Having an idea about what you are actually looking for in the electronic circuit is what the conceptualization is all about. How can approach towards creating something that we do not have any idea about? This is why the initial idea and concept formulation is so important. So, the first thing to begin with the designing part is to have a concept about what you are looking for?
2.       Initial planning – once you have set up your target in mind, regarding what you are going to create then comes the planning step. This involves everything from arranging for the goods that are going to be required in the creation of the design to carrying out feasibility studies, which will make sure that the design is possible. Feasibility studies hold great significance, as they give a clear cut idea about whether the design is possible or not?
3.       Final design and manufacturing – after planning comes the most important step i.e. the manufacturing itself. Once the customized electronic design has passed through the feasibility studies, it is ready to be manufactured on a large scale at the manufacturing plant. Thereby, leading to the last step of the process.
4.       Testing – electronic testing is the final step in the procedure. The fact that electronic circuit is going to be used in equipment used for numerous purposes makes it important to get the circuit tested before it is finally supplied. A slight error in the manufacturing can prove be dangerous. Therefore, testing becomes so important.
5.       Supply – once the testing is complete, the circuits are ready to be supplied to various electronic manufacturing companies, which are going to utilize them for numerous applications. Thereby completing the chain of manufacturing and supply and ending the process of customization.
All the above mentioned information gives you a good idea about the steps involved in the electronic circuit designing process. So, if you are dealing in the electronic business, having knowledge about how the process is carried out can come in handy in times of need.

Step by step procedure of electronic product designing!

Preparing an electronic product is quite a daunting task, but if one is aware of the design and development steps then a good finished electronic product can be made.

Here are consecutive stages or phases of
electronic product design that are required to create well designed electronic product:
  • Conceptualization phase: The first and foremost step involves listing down the requirements, which are needed for preparing a new product or are required for making variations in the existing product. Usually, product is broadly designed on the basis of market needs.
  • Research phase: During this phase detailed design specification is done. It includes identifying the material, method, technology and venders required to produce the product.
  • Circuit designing: Under this phase, product diagrams are being created via the help of computer drafting software. Once the designed is being prepared it is being verified by testing it on the circuit stimulator. And from this phase, assembly drawing process, along with ordering of product parts is being done.
  • Electronic printed circuit board design: In this stage 4 major steps are being carried out:
    • Selection of package: A complete package is being designed and selected during this process. During the designing package, mechanical drawing of the assembly is produced, which is further supplied to the manufacturer, if drawings get selected.
    • Designing of graphics: With the approval of the package of circuit design, graphics and nomenclature would be designed. They would be displayed in the form of overlays, labels and silkscreens.
    • Resolves all the requirements of circuit diagram: By the packaging design process all the issues related to requirements of the circuit diagram are being resolved.
    • Artwork is processed: Once all the issues are resolved, artwork is processed, which is further being etched on the printed circuit board by the manufacturer.
  • Review design: Once the things are jotted down on the circuit board, it is again being evaluated so that no further complications can come during the Manufacturing of the product. Thus appearance, build-cost, functioning and possible enhancements are taken into consideration during this stage.
  • Testing setup and manufacturing setup: During this stage, the product is subjected for quality testing in order to see its performance. In technical terms it is also termed as quality test procedure.
  • Documentation: Once the product is prepared all documentation is compiled, which comprise of circuit diagrams, parts lists, master printed circuit artwork, parts sources, software source code and documentation, mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, and all other items.

What printed circuit boards are made up of?

For smooth functioning of electronic circuit cards, printed circuit boards play a vital role in it. In other words, they are designed to give a base to the electronic cards. With the help of conductive bonding materials parts are attached to the board and electricity is passed from one part to another, for the working of the board

However, before soldering the board, an engineer would first draw Printed circuit board design that would show where all the electronic cards would be placed and how will the cards would be connected with each other?

Once the design process is completed then comes the soldering part of the board. However, in order to prepare the board various materials are needed for it. Now, let’s have a look on those materials, which helps in making of printed circuit boards
  • Core material: The first core material, which is used in making of printed circuit boards, is copper sheet. Two sheets of copper are used on either of the side or only on one side of the board. They are measured in ounces (oz) by the manufacturers and laid over the board after measuring the inch/mm thickness of the sheet.
  • Pre-preg material: This also comprises of same material as that of core material. But comes in more standard-sized, soft and flexible form.
  • Cooper foil: This is thin sheet of foil that is used with pre-preg materials. Basically, it’s done to adhesive the material with the board firmly, so that later on there is no further breach of wires that would affect the functioning of electronic system.
  • Cooper plating: This is primarily done when the board is on the finished process stage. This helps in providing additional thickness to the board when the drilling part is performed.
  • Solder flow: In order to protect the copper layer from oxidation and help in preparing the board for soldering process, solder is applied on the external surfaces of board. Then the board would go through the SMOBC (Solder Mask over Bare Copper) process. During this the board would be masked and only the exposed area of the board would be applied solder.
  • Solder mask: As discussed above, during the SMOBC solder mask is being used, which helps in protecting the board from following things:
  • Protect from solder bridges
  • Protect from the effects of environmental problems
  • Protect the components of the board
  • Electrically protect the board
  • Protect the board from the heat that is being generated from the components placed over the board
  • Soldered pad: There are two types of pads- soldered surface mounted pad and soldered thru-hole pad. Surface mounted pad is being used for mounting surface and thru-hole pad is a pad that comprise of various holes on it and helps in placing the component with the help of lead through the hole.
  • Slots: These are similar to plated/non-plated thru-holes but differ from them due to its characteristics and its shapes. Slots or cutouts should be cut according to the parameters of radius with a round bit. However, cutting should be performed slowly, so as to prevent breakage of the board.
Thus on the whole designer makes sure that everything is planned beforehand, during the electronic product design. So that nothing is misplaced that might hamper the working of printed circuit board
